Jason,
My understanding is that a Cisco router with no ppp authentication commands
entered will still answer pap or chap challenges presented to it. It will
not send any challenges to the other router. Did you try to debug the ppp
authentication when you didn't have any ppp authentication commands entered.
You should have seen the authentication taking place.

Subject: PPP auth

All,

I have the following URL from Cisco:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/131/ppp_callin_hostname.html
<http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/131/ppp_callin_hostname.html>

which states that you use ppp authentication chap callin to provide one way
auth. I have also done this by not specify ppp auth chap on one side of my
connection and I get the same results. I am looking to be able to auth one
way and not the other, for example if you have a non Cisco device on one
side. Any ideas as to which is right? There is also a ppp chap wait command
- could someone please clarify the uses of these and the applicable
scenarios?
