You're referring to the plaques which have your name and number. The
original plaques indeed looked like a medal, as I recall they weren't
gold colored, more like brushed chrome. These have been replaced with
a glass plaque of some type, but the old style are supposedly available
for purchase, price unknown. It's in the CCIE FAQ on the Cisco website.
I got my number after they stopped giving the "medal" style and before
the new ones, and have received nothing in terms of a plaque. Supposedly
I should get the new one for free or, if I want to pay extra, the old
style. My understanding is that you're not allowed to have more than one,
in other words you can't get one of each unless you're a double CCIE.
I just haven't bothered to pursue getting the plaque, either style.
