BGP as-path access-lists

I am focusing on Advanced BGP issues. The main problem I am having is
logically understanding the use of BGP expressions. I understand the setup,
path decision process, route-maps, etc. The main problem for me is reading a
requirement for preferred transit AS, preference, etc. and translating that
into an as-path access-list. I look at solutions and don't quite understand
how the requirement was translated into the expression the solution uses.

I have Caslow and Halabi (both 2nd Edition) and have read them. Does anyone
know of any readings that focus on understanding the as-path access-list
expressions in more advanced scenarios so that I can practice them.
