I'm pretty sure there never was a WS-X5224R. Did you mean the
WS-X5225R?

Well, you could FEC to a pc with NICs that support that (such
as the Intel PRO/100 NICs).

One other notable difference is that the R modules support
inline rewrites, where the module itself (not the supervisor)
rewrites headers when doing MLS.

For training for the CCIE lab test, either one would be fine.
