I don't know about the 3920, but my Cisco Cat 1800 TR switch has two blades.
One has 8 normal RJ-45 TR ports, and the other has 1-station FFDI as well as
4 RJ-45 ports capable of being attached directly to an end station if you
make a special cable (the directions are in the docs to the 1800 switch).
It may be that the 3920 does not have direct attach ports. However, since
it is a newer and fancier switch than the 1800, I would imagine that it
might well have some ports that are direct-attach capable. Play with the
menu and look at the docs. And MAUs are not such bad folks once you get to
know 'em (at least IBM MAUs with Type-1 ports and a starter tool to go with
'em are not bad).
