Ian,

You should definitely be using a straight-through cat-5 cable, as
far as I know. I'm not an expert here, but I have used TR some in
my home lab.

 Make sure that you are *NOT* connecting it to the RO (ring out)
or RI (ring in) ports on the mau. I believe that these are for
chaining mau's together, not connecting end stations. Do you have
the same ring speed set on all routers connected to the mau? Is
it possible that you have a bad mau? You should hear a click in
the mau after you admin up the interface. If not, the mau could
be bad.

Just some things off the top of my head that may or may not be
the culprit.
