Am I correct in understanding that the console works while booting the IOS
and config, but stops responding when complete? If so, then it would appear
to be a software problem. Is the router reachable (pings/telnets) from
other interfaces (Ethernet/Serial) or other routers? Are there any routing
protocols running on the 4000's? If so, check with the other routers to see
if it appears in the routing processes on the other routers.
The fact that all 3 routers had it happen in the span of a week would seem
to indicate a software problem. Did you upgrade the IOS on these boxes
recently? If so, maybe the IOS is the culprit. What happens if you change
the config-register to 0x2142 (boot from flash, no config) - does it work
then? If so, something in your config is causing the problem.
Try out the suggestions in:

Good Luck.
