You don't connect the router to the ring out or ring in port of a MAU. It
needs to be connected to one of the eight normal ports. The RI and RO ports
are for extending the size of the ring from 8 to 16, etc.
I had the same questions about lobe cable, and you use the same pinout as
for 10baset with RJ45, with the exception of the direct attach cable that
you would use from a workstation (NIC) to a token ring switch direct attach
port (like on the FDDI +TR blade of a Catalyst 1800).
The bad news is that if you are using CAT5 cable, you may still experience
problems with token ring. At least I and many others did. The solution to
my TR problems was IBM MAUS and Type 1 cables (the big heavy cables with the
ugly hermaphrodite plugs).
