I don't know of any changes with certain code revisions or with your 6509...
But, if you are running 802.1Q on an all-Cisco switched LAN, it will be one
instance per VLAN - a Cisco extension to 802.1Q. Since 802.1Q defines only
1 instance, this changes with other vendor's hardware. To get around that,
I believe there are certain things you can do, though -- like PVST+.
I'll qualify this and say that what I am most familiar with is the 5000
series switches that are still running 4.5(9) code, but I haven't heard of
any major changes with this...
