What would be polite is to run "for profit" stuff by Paul first and post
only with his pre-approval. After all, Paul built it and maintains it.
Since none of us contribute$ and all of us benefit from his altruism, we
should all respect his vision of what Groupstudy is.
We want two contradictory things: a low signal:noise ratio on the list and
the opportunity to hear about neat products that fit a niche within the
community. A very fair solution, in my opinion, is for Paul to turn this
into a way to compensate himself for his time and allow others to advertise.
You know that message at the bottom of all our e-mails about "to
unsubscribe" and "don't post lab swaps here"? Since we all ignore them (I'm
basing this on the evidence), why don't we encourage Paul to sell ads there.
He finally benefits from all his hard work, vision maintained, and we are
free to dilute the signal:noise ratio with our usual silliness.
