The routers do not report their Chassis serial number electronically YET. I
usually store the serial number under the chassis id snmp variable when
installed. This allows me to do inventory every year in just a few minutes.
I have been told that electronic serial numbers are a possilbility in the
not so distance future, but for now only the only devices I have found that
report the serial number correctly are the catalyst switches.
