Sounds like you have a 2500 series router. If you notice, the router likely
has less DRAM than flash - so you must ask yourself, how does the router
load the IOS into DRAM when it boots? The answer is, it doesn't. It runs
the IOS directly from the flash (i'm not sure how it accomplishes this).
THe caveat is, you cant erase the IOS image while the router is running from
it! So instead, you must boot from the IOS image in ROM - this will free up
the flash. To do this:
1. change the config register to 0x2101
2. reboot
Now when you do a show version it will show the flash as 'read/write'.
(when running the IOS from flash it shows the flash as 'read only').
