Ciao
Thanks for the benefit of the doubt but I was using G's. Once trunked into
my network they start to run at high CPU even with no client PCs on them.
It may be the dot1q trunking protocol doing this. My point about out of the
box wasn't quite right I should have said before clients we connected.
Even when I fully populate the switches the CPU usage only goes up very
slightly.
I can't post configs/sh proc cpu due to security concerns but look at my
earlier comments about data through put.
My point is: at the end of the day the only thing that matters is how many
bits you're shifting not how much load you have on the CPU.

Actually, Andrew might have been referring to an 'XL' and said 'G' by
mistake... in which case his statement would be very accurate. It is
normal for a 2900XL or 3500XL switch to indicate a CPU utilization value
of 30% to 50%, even under minimal load... ie. at idle.
Before you assume "Thats not a true statement at all", check out
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/19.html or go grab a switch and
take a look...

Thats not a true statement at all. It depends on what type of trunking
your
using, whether you using authentication or not, SNMP or logging. I have
a
couple of 4006 running tacacs, SNMP, logging, and mutliple vlans with
ISL
and the Utilization never gets over 15%. Have you tried MLS??
(multi-layer
switching)
What MLS does is allows it so that when one node on a VLAN needs to
exchange
packets with another VLAN it doesnt have to traverse to a remote router
everytime for packet transfer, its done at a router that is closest toa
the
4006. Also check your spanning tree and VTP server settings.
