Default Route/Static Route Question

I have a simple question. Everyone knows that static routes are not allowed in
the exam.
However there are situations where a default route is needed.
When this route shows up in the routing table it is a static route.
Is this considered a static route by exam standards and forbidden, or is this a
llowed?
