You may need to set the flow control to hardware.

Here are the (Windows 2000) hyperterminal settings:
com 1
bps: 9600
parity: none
stop bits: 1
Flow control: none

Symptoms: when the connection is made, nothing appears on the screen - no
garbled text, just the blinking cursor. What's wrong?

Com 1 is plugged into the router's console port.
