Bruce,

You need the flash to be read/write before you can write over it.

I usually run the router in boot mode (confreg 0x2101) and then the
flash is read/write (since it's not loading and using the flash image),
then, assuming the boot roms support it, tftp from there.
     -OR-
Set your box up to load its image via TFTP (I prefer PumpKin TFTP
Server) with the boot system tftp command
i.e. "boot system tftp myimage 10.1.1.1"
Once you are operational, then copy the image to flash (since booting
from tftp doesn't copy the image to flash, it just runs the image (I
think))

I beleive this also a common problem for people adding a second flash
stick and trying to create one large flash partition. If one of them is
read only, then I don't think its possible to combine them until you boot
up in some way without using the image stored on the flash chip(s).

There may be other (better) ways, but this is what works for me.

Subject: Copy TFTP Flash w IOS 9.14

I have an old 2501 with 4MB of flash running IOS 9.14. I am trying to
upgrade to at least 10.22, but I cannot do a "copy tftp flash" because I
get
an error message that says, "Copy aborted. Flash address space cannot be
written to" then when I do a "show flash all" it says,
"4096K bytes of Flash address space sized on CPU board. Memory type is
Flash. Flash address space access is READ-ONLY"

I have been all over Cisco's web site. I have tried "erase flash", "delete
flash" and "format flash". I must be doing something wrong. Please help me
if you can tell me how to copy a new IOS image into this router.
