Ah ha...

Now the lights come on.

The Sup I and Sup II both have DB25 console ports. These accept
rolled over connections using the DB25 hood marked Modem.

Yes, the Sup III (and I'll assume the II G) have an RJ45 console port.
This console port DOES in fact take a straight thru cable in contrast
to what most Cisco devices need which is a rolled cable.

This is where the confusion is being created. Some people are talking
about Sup I's and II's with DB25 ports and some are talking about Sup III's
with RJ45 ports.

By default, Cat5K Sup engine console port expects a straight-through Cat-5
UTP cable (RJ-45 male-connector) to connect to a terminal server such as a
PC. On the contrary, most Cisco routers expects a console (roll-over) cable
for their console ports. The octal cable is nothing more than 8 console
cables bundled together. Therefore, if you want to use that to connect to
Cat5K, you need to convert it to a straight-through cable by using another
piece of roll-over cable and a straight-through RJ-45 coupler (roll-over +
straight + roll-over = straight). That's why Timothy had this worked for
him.

If you are using a Sup II G or III G, you can also pinch IN the console port
mode switch beside the console port to make it to accept a normal console
cable. In this case, you can plug the Octal cable directly to the console
port.
