To connect the ATM switch to the Cat5K bus you have to put in a LANE
module, then you have to "front patch" the ATM module. That is how seperate
they are.

All they did was add a few more traces on the backplane to provide the ATM
switching backplane. If you look at the bottom 5 slots on a 5500 chassis
you will see an extra set of plugs, thats the ATM bus. It has a posh
marketing name that I have forgotten.

I gotta tell you that a 5500 at home is gonna make a lot of noise and take
up a lot of space. From memory it about 1.2 metres tall and needs at least
two people to rack, preferably three. It'll look good though.

Networking Jargon Folklore: This type of solution is often described as a
Power Sucking Alien, its not native to the architecture, the whole thing is
an afterthought. It connects to chassis but only draws power, no or limited
integration with the backplane.

Very common in early version architectures or poorly designed products (for
example, early revision Nortel Passport 8000 configurations).
