I prefer to unshut everything so that by the time I get to the last router I
can start testing connectivity on the first one. Saves some time which
always help. Also, when working on a router with token ring I would do all
the interfaces first and then the TR. This way the initialisation of the
interface doesn't keep me from getting at the other interfaces.

Not a CCIE but have done the lab. Maybe thats why ? ;-)
