Regarding my last post, there were two problems.
1. I had an error in the statement:
ipx ipxwan 0 unnumbered r3
it was the same on both routers. It needs to have
"r3" as the last parameter on router r3 and "r6" as the
last parameter on router r6.
2. clock rate statement on the DCE side was set
to the max, 4000000. ipxwan doesn't like this.
I set the clock rate to 56000 and everything started
working. I haven't experimented to determine what
the max rate that ipxwan supports yet, but be aware
that setting it too high breaks ipxwan and 56000 is
a good value.
