You do have a problem. The only thing I can think of is for you to
steal the nvram from a good 2501 with a working AUX config and put it
into the non-working router. It's been so long since I've looked into a
2501, I can't remember if this is possible.

So, the questions now are: is the nvram soldered in or socketed? Do you
have another 2501?

The next option is component level repair of the console port. ie.
replace the UART chip & check continuity of the solder joints.

Another thought, sometime the pins on an RJ port get bent up or sideways
and don't make a connection. Have you checked the console for bent
pins?
