All of my equipment is in the crawl space as well, the problem is not with
cats, but rather a cute one year old child who loves to touch and pull at
everything.

My solution was also to go the basement route; our house has 3/4 basement,
the rest is a crawl space with a concrete floor (approx. 4' above the
basement floor); all my goodies are in the crawl space. 20-Amp dedicated
circuit piped in, CAT5 running to all points in the house so I can work
peacefully from the den. There is a problem however, when the house is
quiet the white noise from all the routers, switches, servers, etc. is quite
noticeable upstairs - I think some thick fiberglass insulation is in my
future to try and dampen the sound.
Regarding the cat problem, I try very hard to keep the four-legged, furry
types out of the basement but it is a challenge - the little one heads
straight for the crawl space.
I don't have any power-switch testers yet, but one is on the way (end of
July) so I'm hoping I can wrap this thing up before then as life's
priorities and my sleep schedule will be altered once the stork swings by
the house.
