 Maybe not certifications, although I would think the CCIE WAN switching
would get a good pay level. Maybe even more than routing and switching
CCIE.

 Guess it depends what you expect to get out of the certifications.
If you are trying to increase your salary I would say that the CCIE is
the best. There are other technical certifications out there that may not
get you any financial gain. But I still might go for that certification
to get the knowledge. I too am to much of a techie.

 I think really to advance your career you might have to look at a
degree program such as a MBA or Master degree in Engineering. Not to say
that this is the only way to advance but it can make it easier.
I have though about going down one of these tracks but am not sure if
I am willing to put the time commitment in.
