What other instances require a reload after a configuration change? Dealing
with Nortel RS on a daily basis I find myself hardly EVER making a dynamic
change on a router! A major plus for Cisco.

Subject: RE: Changing subinterface link types...
The IOS allocates IDB's for each interface and subinterface. The Interface
Descriptor Block are hard allocated and cannot be removed/released and is a
fundamental part of the IOS software architecture. Depending on your mood
this is either a pain, or a just one of those things.
If you want more info, you should read Inside Cisco IOS Software
Architecture from Cisco Press or do a search on IDB's.
