Ping across multiple DS-3 interfaces that were swapped!

I must be missing something. We had a hardware failure this morning, and
after replacing the coax cables to both our DS-3 ports I thought everything
would be OK. However, my BGP peers to two different carriers would never
come up, even though I could ping across both links. I finally did a
traceroute and saw the path going through several hops for what should have
been a directly connected link. I decided to swap the cables between the two
carriers, and lo and behold, it worked! I'm definitely missing something
here. How could I ping across the circuits like this? I figure there must
be some kind of inverse arp going on here, but there didn't seem to be any
problem even though the networks didn't match. I'd appreciate any input.
Thanks - Allyn
