I may be totally of mark, but I thought that OSPF calculated the Cost by
dividing the media speed by a reference bandwidth (1000000 by default)
This gives a cost of 10 for Ethernet and a Cost of 1 for FastEthernet, FDDI an
d
faster media.
To change the cost with out using the COST command you would need to change the
reference bandwidth from 1000000 to some other value.
This will also enable high speed (greater than 100Mbs) links to be
differentiated in path selection eg. Gigabit versus ATM
Use under Router OSPF
ospf auto-cost reference-bandwidth

I'm pretty sure the OSPF computes cost by dividing 100 mb by the bandwidth
configured. 100,000/10,000 = 10, which is the default cost on 10 meg
ethernet.

Philip,
The trick here is to use the bandwidth command on the interface.
Try several different settings and watch what happens to your OSPF
interface costs.
I believe the point of having you understand non OSPF parameters
effecting OSPF parameters is critical.

Good morning all,.........
Can someone explain this to me?
In task 3, step 12........ "Configure R6 so that its S1 interface speed is
correctly reflected in the OSPF metrics without using the "ip ospf cost"
command."......
What does this mean? .......... where would I see these parameters?
And also.... Step 15 ,........ "Configure R7 using the ip ospf command such
that the speed of the link of interface S4 is correctly reflected in the
OSPF metrics...
What does this mean? .......... where would I see these parameters?
Thanks in advance!!!!!
