I don't know that there necessarily is an advantage. It's just another
protocol. I'm sure there is some advantage, but I think you have to look
pretty hard to find it. 99% use gre

and routing protocols) between two routers, so what is the advantage of ipip

router B for IP only, use "tunnel mode ipip" instead of the default "tunnel
mode gre"?

over an ip tunnel.
