Sam is totally correct. I was in your situation at one point many years
ago. So, I trained myself. Gave them a couple of chances to invest in me
via salary and training. The company declined so I left them high and dry
(I built and ran their nationwide network.)

You need an employer that ENCOURAGES and supports employee
enrichment. This way, they get a higher quality employee and they boost
moral at the same time. AND if the employer is interested in keeping you -
they will find a way - either in salary or other ways of compensation. It
sounds like your company could care less whether you stayed or not.
