Not necessarily. Some have passed on the first attempt. I made my first
attempt knowing that I was not prepared, a year ago. This list hadn't been
around for long, and there was a great deal of "mystique" about the lab,
with lots of rumor and innuendo about the content and structure.

The choice to take the lab even though unprepared was to some extent
an economic one, and to some extent exploratory. One option at the
time was to pay in the order of $6K to a "bootcamp" type of training
outfit, plus a week's time, plus travel expense, with no guarantee of
passing. I felt that $1K and a couple of days would give a taste of
the real thing, and eliminate much of the mystique and rumor.

This attitude today may be what's leading to the 5-month leadtimes to
get a lab vacancy, though it wasn't nearly as much of an issue then.
