actually.....

not too long ago, I needed to swap out the IOS an a 3640 in a remote rack
that I was accessing using telnet to a as2511rj. the rack has a PC used a
TFTP server.

To make a long story short I nuked the flash card, the bootflash, AND loaded
a 3620 image on the bootflash. doh.

There was no one on-site to help me. out of desperation I telnetted in
using hyperterminal, used the terminal download command on the as2511, put
the 3640 in rom monitor mode, and did a xmodem file transfer to the box from
across the internet. 90 minutes later the router was back online.

enabling the break key on the 3640 before I did the upgrade really saved my
behind. Also, use xmodem-1k instead of regular xmodem. much faster.

Subject: Re: IOS upgrade and XMODEM

In Cisco routers, xmodem protocol is usually used for disaster
recovery, to
load an IOS using the console port. In the rom mon mode, you type xmodem
<file
name> and send the IOS file via Hyperterminal (or other terminal) using
Xmodem
protocol. This procedure is slower than TFTP, because you are using console
speed, not LAN speed. You can increase the Xmodem tranfer, increasing the
console baud rate, but in this case, you can config the speed up to 115200
if
you are directly connected.... I´ve never loaded an IOS via modem connection
to
the console port, but if you think in this solution, you can set the console
baud rate for the convenient speed, and try to load it.
