I have found the following configuration procedure works well for USR
Sportster modems. This is the procedure we send to all our field techs when
they are connected a new modem to a router and it has worked every time.
I've never connected a Courier to a router, but this might help.
1. Connect the modem to a serial port on a PC using the rollover cable
and one of the adapters in the console kit labeled TERMINAL.
2. Reset the factory defaults on the modem by setting DIP switch 7 down
and then turn the modem on, then off.
3. Set DIP switches 1, 3, and 8 down, all others up.
4. Turn on the modem.
5. Open Hyperterm with the settings of 9600, N, 8, 1 and hardware flow
control.
6. Type "AT" and hit return. If the modem responds with "OK", then
you are communicating with the modem correctly. If you don't see "OK", then
resolve the communication problem between the modem and the PC.
7. Now you are ready to enter the initialization string into the modem.
The following string has been tested on a 1600, 2500, 2600, 3810, and an
RSP4 and will work.
8. Type ATE0F1Q1&I0&H1&K1&A0&B1&N6&C1&D3&W0 and hit enter. (The 0s are
zeros).
9. Type ATI4 (this shows you the contents of the modem's NVRAM) and
make sure that the contents of the memory match the settings you entered via
the string. If any of the settings don't match, you can try resetting the
factory defaults in the modem and trying to enter the string again. If
something still doesn't match, then you have a bad modem.
10. Turn off the modem.
11. Set DIP switches 1, 4, and 8 down and all others up.
12. Turn the modem on.
13. Connect the modem to the console port on the router and you are now
ready to dial in.

Subject: USR Courier I modem
I am attempting to get a Courier ISDN modem to talk to a 2600 aux port
(unsuccessfully).
Has anyone any experience with this or a standard analogue courier modem on
remote dial up. The modem seems to be answering the incoming analogue call
okay but won't talk to the aux or com ports after loading the cisco
recommended settings:
line aux 0
password 7 0458
login
modem autoconfigure type usr_courier
Any pointers appreciated. I am in the UK, but don't think that should make
too much difference from the U.S. settings?
Thanks in advance.
