IRDP again - need help

Hi all,
I am playing with IRDP and cannot get it to work. I have 4
routers (R2,R6,R7,R8) on an ethernet subnet (137.20.20.0), one of these
(r8)is acting as a host (i.e 'no ip routing' is configured on it)

On the ethernet port on R2,r6,r7 i have 'ip irdp' configured. the ip
irdp preference for these three rtrs is 20,60,70 resp. I expect r7 to be
the chosen one. r8 *always* uses r2 to get to networks other than the
ethernet subnet. R2 *is* the only rtr with a connection to the rest of the
network but i have icmp redirects turned-off. Shouldn't r8 first go to r7
and then to r2 and out?

I could ping everything when this was the configuration. Then I tried it
with proxy-arp turned off on the ethernet int on r2,r6,r7. It
seemed to me that the proxy-arp was allowing r8 to be able to ping
everything. With that turned off, now I get 'encapsulation failed"
when I try to ping anything other than 137.20.20.x.

On r8, i have an ip address on interface e0. I didn't think I needed the
statement 'ip irdp' on this interface but have tried it with and without it
with 0 success.

Please help... Thanks.
