Which version of Linux?
Most have some kind of terminal program. On RedHat, it's minicom.
1) SU to root, unless you already have permissions to open the serial port
2) enter "minicom -s"
3) set the port to ttyS0, speed 9600 8N1, no flow control
4) go into modem setup and delete the setup and reset strings
5) exit to go to the terminal window, and you should be there.
If you need details on the cabling, let me know. Using the terminal
adapter and RJ45 ribbon cable that came with the Cisco equipment is the
easiest.
