On frame-relay, you can use the backup interface
command on the sub-interface of a single DLCI and it
should work fine whenever that DLCI goes away. But if
you have multiple DLCIs then yea, it's not going to
kick in the backup unless you lose all the DLCIs on
the sub-interface backup is configured on or the
physical ckt goes down. If you lose multiple DLCIs
then 99% of the time its because you don't have LMI or
its a ckt problem.
Speaking of backup interface, awhile back I ran into a
interesting problem with it on PPP interfaces. Still
believe its a code problem, but anyway it would not
let you configure backup interface on the interface if
the ISDN was up but if interface was shutdown it
would. When the backup tried to kick in, if you had
PPP debugs on it would do this "PPP LCP: Not allowed
on interface". If anyone is interested, I think I
still have my notes on this one.
