You're wrong - that's an undocumented feature.
I have a couple of old 2500 boxes with small flash (mostly 4M) that
runing new compressed images without any problems.
The only problem can be if you have _really_ old box with prehistoric
loader code.

At the load time if loader see the *.Z image on the flash - it loads and
decompresses
it to RAM. Like the situation where you run from TFTP server.
Be warned - you'll need at least 16M of RAM.
The second drawback - 2500 has two memory bus architecture - one for FLASH
(usually for
IOS ode) and second for RAM - usually the packet buffer space.
Whan you run IOS from RAM, in principle, you loose some performance.

Try yourself and don't always trust the docs. :-)

Not on a 2500 (which runs the IOS from flash) unfortunately!!

If you have enough RAM installed - you can compress the image with Unix
'compress' and
then it'll fit into 8M flash.
The drawback is that it'll run from RAM and the boot time will be looooong.
