This doesn't really answer your question, but...

I used Cox@home in San Diego about a year ago & I seem to recall
they used DHCP. I'm using Time Warner RoadRunner now & they
use DHCP.

If you get hold of 12.1(2)T or greater, you can config the
router as a DHCP client (ip address dhcp) and then you can
do cool stuff like use NAT/CBAC/whatever between a provider
that only does DHCP and your internal net. I've been running
this way for about 2 weeks (replaced a Linux system).
