From my testing in our lab, if you setup a point-point subinterface,
anything that requires multiple VC's didn't work (such as one vc for
signaling (qsaal) and another for ilmi). Changing the interface to
multipoint fixed the problem.

In Caslow's book (p.276) he states that a LEC must be configured on a
multipoint sub-interface to make it a lane client. I've searched
through the Cisco docs and can not find any information that backs
that up. In fact, the examples I have found just use subinterfaces.
Can anyone confirm or deny his statement?
