Trust me - it needs to be mutlipoint.

Up to 11.2 and some early versions of 11.3, the default
subinterface type is 'multipoint', so you didn't need to
state it explicitly. With 11.3 and beyond, you need to
specify point-to-point or multipoint; there is no default.

A LEC needs to be configured on a multipoint subinterface
because it will terminate multiple VC's (up to 5 overhead
VC's for starters, plus any Data Direct SVCs for connections
to other LECs). A point-to-point interface lets you
terminate one and only one VC and would therefore prevent a
LEC from working.
