F.Y.I.
Switch type could be defined under the interface
R7(config)#int bri 0
R7(config-if)#isdn switch ?
basic-1tr6 1TR6 switch type for Germany
basic-5ess AT&T 5ESS switch type for the U.S.
basic-dms100 Northern DMS-100 switch type
basic-net3 NET3 switch type for UK, Europe and Asia
basic-ni National ISDN switch type
basic-ts013 TS013 switch type for Australia
ntt NTT switch type for Japan
vn3 VN3 and VN4 switch types for France
For my ISDN line at home, I was asked to use 5ess by the telco, but it
didn't work.
I had to change to basic-ni to make it work. (I live in California)

Layer 1 isdn problems are switch mis-assigned, or physical layer problem,
like
incorrect pinout between dmarc, and the isdn jack, that includes the cable
from
the wall to the U interface. The two most common switch types in Norht
America
are dms100 and 5ess. Switch type is an option available at the router
global
config level, not under the interface.
