This is a TR MAU 8228NP. I'm do not have much experience
with TR but I believe that it does need a jumper from RI to RO.
I have 2 maus and 2 different routers causing the errors below:
r3(config-if)#ring 16
r3(config-if)#no shut
%LINK-5-CHANGED: Interface TokenRing0, changed state to initializing
r3(config-if)#
%LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface TokenRing0, changed state to down
%TR-3-OPENFAIL: Unit 0, open failed: Phys. Insertion, ring beaconing
%LINK-5-CHANGED: Interface TokenRing0, changed state to initializingshut
r3(config-if)#

John,
Why do you need that type of cable? Are you going from your Token interface
to the hub? Just plug into ports 1 through 8, set ring speed (4 or 16) and
issue a no shut. You should see it initialize, then go up and up. I would
recommend having two hubs to simulate VLANs if a switch isn't available for
your lab.
