Folks - clarification
The point of the software config register [first 2 octets in NVRAM in most
routers] is to control how the router loads. It can be changed either from
config [and therefore privileged mode!] or from rom monitor.
From rommon you can change most of the values [again, depending on the
router you have] and have been able to do so since it was a HARDWARE config
register on the old brown "GS" routers!
the bits [numbered 0-15] that you will probably find interesting are:-
0-3 - controls where to get IOS
6 - where to get a config [use NVRAM or ignore and prompt for input or
autoinstall etc]
8 - break disabled after 60s
11 and 12 - "old" console speed [still valid with 3600s but may have it's
meaning changed]
I suggest anyone wanting to get through the lab learn the purpose of ALL
these bits [and how to change them]. There are loads of places on CCO
where you can find this, or any CCSI worth anything will show you in class
if you ask nicely!
And don't forget to "initialize" before "booting"! :-)
Good Luck
