Reading over some notes that I have for this setup

 Router3(Area0)---- Router2(Area1)-----Router1(Area2)

The transit (Virtual link routers) Router3 and Router 2 have
to do MD5 authentication across the Virtual link

 Router 3
 router ospf 1
 area 0 auth message-digest
 area 1 virtual-link 132.2.22.2 message-digest-key 1 md5 0 cisco

 Router 2
  router ospf 1
  area 0 auth message-digest
  area 1 virtual-link 132.2.33.3 message-digest-key 1 md5 0 cisco

The key think to remember is that Router2 is now part of Area0.
This is why you have to do MD5 authentication on Area 0 on router2
and also to the virtual link.
