Did you get any other options when you pressed "?" ? I just tried it on my
12.0(9) router and got this:

r4(config-router)#area 10 ?
   authentication Enable authentication
   default-cost Set the summary default-cost of a NSSA/stub area
   nssa Specify a NSSA area
   range Summarize routes matching address/mask (border routers only)
   stub Specify a stub area
   virtual-link Define a virtual link and its parameters

Were you for sure at the "config-router" prompt? I can't count the number
of times I've typed "route rospf 1" and get a couple of network commands
typed in before I notice my typo.
