One or the other is required see below:

My understanding is if you use the PVC's 0 5 qsaal and 0 16 ilmi then you
will get the prefix from the switch and only need the ATM esi-address
(required)

if you do not use ilmi from the switch to get the prefix then you can
hardcode the atm-nsap address (full 20 byte). (required) It is better to
use YOUR config below if you can :

! ARP client
ip address 10.1.1.1/24
atm pvc 1 0 5 qsaal
atm pvc 2 0 16 ilmi
atm esi-address <esi-addr> --------> is it required or optional?
atm arp-server nsap <nsap-addr>

If you uses ilmi to get a prefix then a show atm-ilmi-status (I think) will
show you the prefix you are getting from the switch.
