George,

FWIW I restarted a 1604 today, and thought of this question. It tells exactly w
hat chips are in what slots: onboard DRAM, SIMM slot and Flash. You can also s
ee it with a show version. Mike hit the nail on the head with the 2500s there
is only one DRAM slot, so that is easy. As for the Flash, try SHOW FLASH ALL -
you may see what you want are looking for -- on a 3640 I can tell it has 2 8Mb
Flash SIMMs. Then with the SHOW VERSION I can see the Flash in the PCMCIA slo
t too. HTH...

As far as I know you can determine the nature of the Flash memories in a cisco
with the command 'show flash chip'; however, I do not know of any command that
will allow you to determine the nature of the installed DRAM. In the 2500 seri
es, a good guess can be made via the fact that it only has one DRAM slot.
        Hope this helps,

Subject: RAM configuration (slightly off topic)

Apologies for being a little off topic, but I thought you guys might
know the answer. Does anyone know how to determine what kind of memory chips a
router has installed? For example, you might telnet into a router at a remote
site and find out that you have 24 MB of RAM, but you would have no idea if yo
u had one 24 MB chip, two 12 MB chips or possibly an 8 MB and 12 MB chip instal
led. Anyone know a way to determine this without traveling to a remote site an
d removing the cover? Thanks!
