I would probably just configure dense mode unless told otherwise.
A little less typing! As you probably know, the sparse-dense
command allows the router to use either dense or sparse mode
depending on the existence of rendezvous point (RP) information
for each muticast group.
I find dense-mode easier to work with & troubleshoot, so in the lab
environment I would prefer not to mess with RP's.
