It just started working. I let it alone for almost 2 hours and went back and it
started to work at least on 1 router.
You can test it using the shutdown/no shutdown on th remote router or doing a c
lear ip bgp on the remote router. I was not able to see the flapping increase w
hen I did shut/no shut/shut/no shut. I had to wait until the bgp session was es
tablished before I shut it down again. This isn't the behavior I expected -- oh
well it works.
time to move on to something else.

Dave,
Without really checking it should work regardless of what type of BGP ( except
Internal BGP ) eg mesh, confederations, because in the end its still just a
route.
When are you sitting your lab exam?
I've just did the written 3 days ago and need to start on the lab.
Cheers

Unfortunately, my rack is an hour away.
On CCO they showed an example of doing a clear ip bgp x.x.x.x and it showed up.
(who know what they reaaly did to make that look good).
So I figured that I should be able to simulate the multiple line failures
shut/no shut , but that didn't work either. I guess I will wait till tommorrow
and play with layer 1.
Do you know if bgp dampening applies to BGP confederations? To bgp they behave
like ebgp connections so it should work ?
Thanks

Dave,
BGP dampening really only works for oscillating routes from EBGP sessions.
Shuting down the serial or ethernet will not simulate an oscillating route.
Maybe you could get a flakey or intermittent UTP cable and try that or do a
"shut" or "no shut" several times really really fast.
Hope this helps, let me know how you go.

Has anyone had luck with BGP dampening? I am attempting a simple config to see
the effects of dampening but am having no luck.
I know that dampening occurs only with ebgp peers so I shutdown the switchport
that is connected to my router simulate an external line failure , but for some
crazy reason the line/protocol on my 4500 stays up (keepalive 10). So I tried i
t
over a serial link did a shut down and showed bgp routes just disappeared with
no dampening or history stats.
Am I just missing something stupid ??
Thanks
