Ricardo,
I think a general rule should be: "Always ask the proctor when in doubt."
Remember that you do not lose points because you ask questions, so don't be
afraid to do so.
Some questions are deliberately vague. The proctor may not be able to
answer your question directly, but he will be able to give you hints as to
the proper way to go.
