Not VIRL but I choose to go down the UNetLab route. It's still a beta,
but I love the vendor agnostic approach to it. It's a good platform if
you enjoy doing and learning things "the hard way", i.e. you don't get
the automation and auto-configuration features that VIRL has; with
UnetLab you're manually punching out configs (in notepad if your CCIE
habits haven't died) and putting them in at the router CLI.
VIRL is fine for CCIEv5 lab preparation as is the WEB-IOU platform.
I just picked up an PowerEdge R410 with a bunch of RAM already loaded in
it for running UNetLab and a few other things at home. The HP
MicroServers were good for a while, but they aren't cutting the mustard
when you're trying to run something more RAM hungry that just a few IOU
instances.
Have a look into UNetLab if you're interested in virtualisation of
networking appliances; there's a bit of mucking around initially and you
do have to go hunting a bit for some of the images, but I feel it's a
good platform. I'm brushing up my Juniper skills a bit, so I'm playing
around with the integration between Cisco and Juniper kit in UNetLab;
the vSRX and vMX platforms coupled with IOU/CSR1000v seem to be good for
this.

Ibm not convinced that it would be ideal for lab prep (not that I know all that much about the lab these days), but itbs in its infancy, so who knows? I remember getting involved with Dynamips when it was still in diapers, too. That was fun. Still have my Mac Mini/4x3560-8PC lab (lots of dust piling up). Just invested in a pretty hefty DIY server (Shuttle) to handle VIRL memory/CPU requirements. Itbs been quite an adventure, thatbs for sureb&
