I cited a page that has some context around it.
*2) You lose DRE when peering two WAAS Express devices. Since WAAS Express
only does DRE decode, having WAAS Express devices on both ends of the
connection means you effectively limit yourself to only TFO + LZ even if
the policy is set for TFO DRE LZ (e.g. Full optimization). This is why
WAAS Express is recommended to peer with a WAAS appliance at the head end.*
Meaning if you're using WAAS Express, the only option you have is TFO DRE
LZ. DRE won't be available without CM so you're down to TFO + LZ.
I believe the reason is CM manages the proprietary encryption of the DRE
Cache on the WAE boxes. In the WAAS bootcamp I went to, I recall losing
the CM causes issues on being able to access the DRE cache. My
notes/workbook are at the office, it would take me some digging to find it.
I would reach out to TAC to confirm this, as it's not best practice and
something I'm not familiar with. From my WAAS 5.0 Sizing Guide (Circa
2012) The 294-4G appears to be the lowest CM box you can use. I assume
that can be picked up on the cheap, otherwise the Cisco WAAS VM options
have to go even lower.
